View of Motomachi Street from the grounds of Zotokuin Temple. Located at the foot of the hill, Motomachi was created when displaced residents of the old Yokohama Village moved here after the opening of the port. Motomachi prospered as a commercial centre catering to foreign residents of the settlement. The street on the right is paved with stones and a rickshaw, a typical mode of transportation, is parked.             The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.               This is the view from Shin-machi of the post town of Hakone when facing Hakone checkpoint. The mountain behind is Komagadake. The street where the palanquin men are is Tokaido Highway (present-day National Route 1). The house on the right is facing toward southwest and a child and an old man are enjoying the sun. Judging from their clothes, it appears to be either late autumn or early spring.                   Nakanodake Shrine is located at the south foot of Mt. Kondo (also called Nakanodake). The deities worshipped are Nihon Buson in the Hongu and Okuninushinomikoto in the Zengu.                     The approach to Ikuta Shinto Shrine taken around the turn of the 20th century. Formerly referred to as Ikuta-no-Baba, this was a scenic path lined with plum and cherry trees and stretching for about 870 meters from the shrine to the beach.
