This is the second part of a set of two photos with [Cabinet Number75‐23‐0](ID 3880). This photo captures the Minamiyamate area from present-day Showakai Hospital in Higashiyamate.. This was after completion of the renovation of Oura Church from 1878 to 1879. The small western-style house under what would later be the Shimizu residence on top of the hill may be the old Walker residence.       This photo captures the back of trading company buildings and consulates along Oura coast street in the mid Meiji period. The street on the right is paved with stones and a rickshaw, a typical mode of transportation, is parked. A number of commercial ships and war vessels are anchored in the port illustrating Nagasaki Port’s golden trade period.         The residence of Okuma Shigenobu

        A scroll is hanging in the alcove, and a large vase has been placed in front. When Okuma Shigenobu died in 1922, his house and garden were donated to Waseda University in accordance with his will. The garden is about 33,960 square metres in area. Okuma Hall is now located on the site of the house. The Rihga Royal Hotel Waseda was opened in the northern part of the garden in 1994.           The residence of Okuma Shigenobu in Totsuka Village (present day Totsuka-machi, Shinjuku Ward). The noted statesman lived in a Western-style mansion in Iida-machi (present day Kudan 1-chome) but later moved into the residence of the former lord of the Takamatsu Clan, Matsudaira Yorisato, located next to Tokyo Polytechnic School. After acquiring the house, he made some extensions and modifications and filled in the garden pond shown in photograph #4005.             This photo is a panoramic view from Kotohira Shrine at Minamiyamate of the southern tip of the foreign settlement and the Naminohira area. The big building in the right foreground is Chintei Elementary school (later Naminohira Elementary School), a newly built and renamed school at the foot of Mr. Nabekanmuri. (Formerly known as Kozone Elementary School at a different location. Someone, possibly a teacher, is standing by the entrance. There are several boys and girls on the school ground.               This is a three-panel panoramic photograph depicting Ohato, Shinchi, the Oura waterfront, Matsugae Bridge, Minamiyamate, Kozone, Naminohira and Furukawa-machi. Shin-Ohashi, Umegasaki and Matsugae bridges have been built as part of the re-routing of Nakashima River, indicating that the date is around 1887. The left panel captures the entire view of Dejima, Shin-ohashi Bridge, Shinchi and Umegasaki, the centre panel the area from Umegasaki to Minamiyamate, the Russian Consulate and the central part of the foreign settlement, and the right panel the area from the central part of the foreign settlement to Furukawa-machi.                   The Shimabara-han Fief Second Residence

                  This location is the present day Tsunazaka slope at Mita 2-chome. The house on the right was the residence of the Matsudairas of the Hizen(present day Nagasaki Prefecture) Shimabara-han fief, the house on the right going up the slope was the residence of the Matsudairas of the Iyo(present day Ehime Prefecture) Matsuyama-han fief, and the one on the left was the second residence of the Matsudairas of Mutsu(present day Aomori and part of Iwate Prefectures). Right now there stands Keio University at the bottom of the slope and the Italian Embassy on top of the slope. The site of the residences of Satohara-han and Matsuyama-han belongs to the Mitsui Club in Tsuna-machi. The road stretching from the centre of the photo to the left corner is the approach to Yasaka Shinto Shrine. Although the site would later become Maruyama Park, no work has been done yet, and a few restaurants stand in the area. A two-story Western-style building of yosemune-zukuri style stands on the northeast side of the street where cherry blossoms would later become a tourist attraction.
