Rokken-jaya at the lakeside is viewed from the precincts of the Chugushi at Futarasan Shinto Shrine. The fact that not a single building is visible on the lakeside in the Utagahama area to the right indicates that the photograph was taken in the early Meiji Period.       Five-story pagoda at Hokanji Temple

      The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed facing east. There are many visitors on the temple approach, and a gas light is visible. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide.             Going down the Hozu River

            A yakata boat descending Hozu River is seen from the northern bank. The Kyoto Railway Company tracks and a tunnel are visible on the right. People took the approximately 16km boat ride from Hozu Town in Kameoka to Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama. The river boats that carried lumber and goods from Tanba Kameoka to Kyoto were converted to leisure boats at the end of the Meiji Period when the Kyoto Railway was established.                 Mt. Fuji seen from Lake Yamanaka, the biggest of the five lakes at the foot of the mountain. The photograph captures the reflection of Mt. Fuji in the lake and a fisherman in a boat. The location is assumed to be Nagaike at Yamanaka-ko Village in Kitatsuru-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture.                   An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.
