A lighthouse in Bizen

Although the photograph is entitled BIZEN on the lower left, this is Sugashima Lighthouse located at the northeastern tip of Sugashima (present-day Toba City, Mie Prefecture) at the entrance to Ise Bay. Designed by British engineer R. H. Brunton and first lit on July 1, 1873, the lighthouse is still in operation today. The attached residence was relocated to Meiji Mura Museum and designated an Important Cultural Asset by the Japanese government.       Three thousand ryo a day falls where it must. This senryu poem means that everyday people spend three thousand ryo (monetary unit in the Edo Period), one thousand in the fish market in the morning, one thousand in the theatres during the daytime, and one thousand in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter in the evening. There was a fish market on the east side of the northern edge of Nihonbashi Bridge during the Edo Period. The man in this photograph is selling fish he just bought at the fish market. Probably taken near Nihonbashi. Since there was no refrigeration then, fish had to be sold within a day and people ate fresher fish than today.         The residence of Okuma Shigenobu

        The residence of Okuma Shigenobu in Totsuka Village (present day Totsuka-machi, Shinjuku Ward). The noted statesman lived in a Western-style mansion in Iida-machi (present day Kudan 1-chome) but later moved into the residence of the former lord of the Takamatsu Clan, Matsudaira Yorisato, located next to Tokyo Polytechnic School. After acquiring the house, he made some extensions and modifications and filled in the garden pond shown in photograph #4005.           This is the head temple of the Jishu sect of Buddhism founded by Ippen. The official name of the temple is Totakusan Muryokoin Shojokoji Temple. The fourth-generation priest Donkai built the temple in 1325. This photograph captures Kyakuden (far left) and Daishoin (far right) over the Chujaku Gate viewed from around Kan'nondo on the left.             This photo has August 20, 1874 written on it. The foundry with two chimneys and the brick building with the boiler room which had started operation directly under the shogunate government in 1857 survived the typhoon. Another brick building, the lathe workshop with the first iron roof truss in Japan was not destroyed. The western-style building on the hill to the left is the dormitory for foreign staff built in April,1874.               This location is the present day Tsunazaka slope at Mita 2-chome. The house on the right was the residence of the Matsudairas of the Hizen(present day Nagasaki Prefecture) Shimabara-han fief, the house on the right going up the slope was the residence of the Matsudairas of the Iyo(present day Ehime Prefecture) Matsuyama-han fief, and the one on the left was the second residence of the Matsudairas of Mutsu(present day Aomori and part of Iwate Prefectures). Right now there stands Keio University at the bottom of the slope and the Italian Embassy on top of the slope. The site of the residences of Satohara-han and Matsuyama-han belongs to the Mitsui Club in Tsuna-machi.
