The Nitenmon Gate,Taiyuin Shrine,Nikko

Nitenmon is located beyond Niomon in the precincts of Taiyuin, the mausoleum of third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. A plaque inscribed with the word Taiyuin by Emperor Gomizunoo is affixed to the upper part of the gate. Two of the four celestial guardians, Jikokuten and Komokuten, are enshrined at the front part of the gate while the other two, Fujin and Raijin, were placed on the back .     Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident).       This stereograph bears the caption View taken from the United States Legation, at Yedo and is said to depict Tempukuji Temple in Azabu, but this is incorrect. The temple is actually Tozenji, located in present-day Takanawa 3-chome. The Shogunate concluded a treaty pact with Great Britain (Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Commerce) in 1858, and Tozenji Temple was designated as the site of the British Legation. This was taken by Swiss Pierre Rossier at the end of the Edo Period.         The front gate of Zojoji Temple at Shiba is visible on the far left. The Tokyo City Railway Mita-Hibiya Line opened here in June 1904, but no train tracks are visible in this photograph. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit.               The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.                 This Kannon-do was rebuilt by the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1649. The style of construction is koran mitesaki-zukuri. The photograph captures a flock of pigeons flying from Niomon (gate). The building burned down in an air raid on March 10, 1945. The present-day Kannon-do was erected on October 17, 1958.                   The red Grand Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shinto Shrine (Important Cultural Asset) is recognized around the world as a symbol of Japan. The current gate, the eighth built since the Heian Period, was completed in 1875. It is approximately 16m tall, and the horizontal part, called 'kasagi,' is approximately 24m long. The posts are made from camphor logs.
