Nunobiki Falls

Medaki waterfall at Nunobiki Falls, the same as photographs #2807, #4682 and #4870, taken in the first half of the Meiji Period. Nunobiki Falls has been a popular tourist spot since ancient times, and after the opening of Kobe port many foreigners visited here on hiking excursions from the foreign settlement. The approach to Ikuta Shrine

The approach to Ikuta Shinto Shrine taken around the turn of the 20th century. Formerly referred to as Ikuta-no-Baba, this was a scenic path lined with plum and cherry trees and stretching for about 870 meters from the shrine to the beach. Nunobiki Falls

Odaki of Nunobiki Falls in the mid-Meiji Period. Because the Odaki and Medaki waterfalls have the appearance of stretched cloth, people started to call them the waterfalls of Nunobiki (pulled cloth). The Nunobiki Amusement Park was built by a private company in 1872, and the area was subsequently developed for entertainment purposes. Yamate Park,Yokohama

Yokohama Park. It was an overgrown cemetery 15 months before this picture was taken. The land was leased on favourable terms from the Japanese government and half of it was made into a park. This was only possible through the persistent endeavours of the inhabitants of the settlement. This photo was taken with almost the same angle as catalogue #2956, and thus, it was probably taken at the same time. One man is in the fall whereas four women are wearing yukata summer kimono looking at the cascade and cooling themselves. Since the way they are is unnatural, they may have been posed for the photograph. Located at the foot of the hill, Motomachi was created when displaced residents of the old Yokohama Village moved here after the opening of the port. Motomachi prospered as a commercial centre catering to foreign residents of the settlement. View of the area near present-day Shin Kobe Station (Sanyo Shinkansen Line) and the New Kobe Oriental Hotel in Chuo Ward. Taken in the latter half of the Meiji Period. On the hillside to the left of the Takimichi (waterfall road) is a hot spring called Nunobiki Spa fed by boiling-hot, carbonated spring water from underground. There used to be many inns, restaurants, and teahouses along the road continuing from the northeast of Ikuta Shinto Shrine to this area. Viewing Oura Foreign Settlement from Japanese Garden next to Chief Officer’s Residence at Dejima

This is one of the oldest scenic photographs of Nagasaki. It was taken by Milton Miller, who came to Nagasaki in 1862, not long after the opening of Japan's doors in 1859. Miller seems to have visited the residence of the chief factor at the Dejima Dutch Factory. Taken from the garden beside the residence, the photograph provides a distant view of the foreign settlement where the 2nd phase of land reclamation work had reached completion and houses were being built. The column on the left is a flag pole to raise the Dutch national flag. The roof of Myogyoji Temple (temporary British Consulate at the time) is visible. The Glover house has not been built yet. Honmoku Point seen from the Fudozaka slope

The promenade from the Bluff of Yokohama to the hills of Negishi end at the beach after going through Fudosaka. At present reclamation of the sea makes it impossible to view this scene.
