Nunobiki Falls

The cylindrical stone structure on the right of the Medaki waterfall is a device to draw water from Nunobiki Dam located upstream. Since this facility was constructed in March 1899 to provide water to the city of Kobe, this photograph must have been taken at the end of the Meiji Period.       Medaki waterfall at Nunobiki Falls, taken around the same time as photographs #2814 and 2827 (Medaki Waterfall of Nunobiki). The presence of the wooden bridge over the river and the teahouse and the absence of a water supply pump suggest that this was taken on the mid-Meiji Period.         Odaki of Nunobiki Falls in the mid-Meiji Period. Because the Odaki and Medaki waterfalls have the appearance of stretched cloth, people started to call them the waterfalls of Nunobiki (pulled cloth). The Nunobiki Amusement Park was built by a private company in 1872, and the area was subsequently developed for entertainment purposes. One man is in the fall whereas four women are wearing yukata summer kimono looking at the cascade and cooling themselves. Since the way they are is unnatural, they may have been posed for the photograph.               This photograph captures the view of Suwano-machi looking southeast. Koeizan Choshoji Temple (Nichiren Sect, 18 Tera-machi, Nagasaki City) is visible at the top of the stone stairs. Mt.                 Fukiage Park,the Imperial Palace

                The residences of feudal lords were formerly located here as protection on the west side of Edo Castle. However, the area was converted to a garden after the great fire of the Meireki Period in 1657. The garden was designed in exact detail, right down to the location of each stone and tree. There were apparently two waterfalls in the garden, one at the southern edge of Oike (Great Pond) in the centre of the garden and the other near Takimi Teahouse. The canal in the centre is the Lake Biwa Waterway built in 1890 to supply drinking water, generate electricity, and facilitate transportation.
