Lake Ashi

The Hakone Imperial Villa is visible on top of the hill of Dogashima. It was built in 1886 as a villa for Emperor Meiji. This site had been called Dogashima (Dogashima- the island of tower) because there was a tower at the Hakone Gongen Shrine in the ancient times. The imperial villa was built because this is the best location to see the inverted reflection of Fuji on the furface of Lake Ashinoko. Also, this site is close enough to Tokyo to avoid the summer heat. The big building in the right foreground is Chintei Elementary school (later Naminohira Elementary School), a newly built and renamed school at the foot of Mr. Nabekanmuri. (Formerly known as Kozone Elementary School at a different location. Someone, possibly a teacher, is standing by the entrance. There are several boys and girls on the school ground.         It happens once in a while there is a lot of snow from February to March at Hakone. Depending on the altitude the amount of snowfall is evidently different. There is a snowbelt around the altitude of 300m and 500m and below that line, the snow hardly accumulates. Therefore, this must be higher than Ohiradai and definately not Yumoto or Tonosawa.                 The Shimabara-han Fief Second Residence

                This location is the present day Tsunazaka slope at Mita 2-chome. The house on the right was the residence of the Matsudairas of the Hizen(present day Nagasaki Prefecture) Shimabara-han fief, the house on the right going up the slope was the residence of the Matsudairas of the Iyo(present day Ehime Prefecture) Matsuyama-han fief, and the one on the left was the second residence of the Matsudairas of Mutsu(present day Aomori and part of Iwate Prefectures). Right now there stands Keio University at the bottom of the slope and the Italian Embassy on top of the slope. The site of the residences of Satohara-han and Matsuyama-han belongs to the Mitsui Club in Tsuna-machi.                   This is the post town of Hakone, with Lake Ashinoko, as seen from what was once Hakone barrier station. As the power lines installed in 1873 from Tokyo to Nagasaki are visible, this photo must have been taken after that. The thatched roofs of honjin are seen. The round, wooded mountain is Mt. Hatabiki. Behind it is Mt. Kurakake which is a part of the outer mountain range of Hakone.                     This is the Byobu Torii Gate located at the intersection of present-day National Route 1 after going down Gongen Slope after walking up the old Hakone Highway from the post town of Hata area. This site was very popular because Lake Ashinoko and the village of Moto-Hakone could be seen as well as the traffic hub.                       During Edo era, there were Naraya, Edoya, Maruya, Yamatoya, and Ohmiya Inns in Dogashima. The two-story building on the left is Yamatoya, the red tower is Yakushi-do (a Buddhist temple hall housing a statue of Yakushi). The waterfall in the centre is Shirabeno-taki. Godan Ryokan Inn stands above the falls. The white western building on the hill is Naraya Hotel and Fujiuya Hotel is to its left.
