Miyajima Island,Aki

Iwaso Inn, located at the entrance of Momijidani Park at Miyajima, opened in 1854. Among the many celebrities who stayed here were Imperial family members, Ito Hirobumi, Natsume Soseki, Mori Ogai, and Helen Keller. A modern fountain was installed when the main inn building was constructed in 1892.       The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed facing east. There are many visitors on the temple approach, and a gas light is visible. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide.           An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.                 Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.                   The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.                       The Golden Pavilion at Rokuon-ji Temple seen from the eastern edge of Kyoko Pond, facing west-northwest. The rock on the left is Hosokawa-ishi, and Ashihara Island is visible behind. The temple was built in 1398 but destroyed by arson in 1950. Unlike the reconstructed building of today, the original roof was supported by many columns at each level. Water weeds fill the surface of the pond. Pine forest surrounds the area. The background is unclear due to the poor colouration.
