This is the stone torii gate dedicated by Kuroda Nagamasa at the front gate (Niomon) to Toshogu Shrine in Nikko. It is nine meters tall, and the pillars are 1.2 metres in diameter. This is the largest granite torii gate in Japan.       The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.         The red Grand Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shinto Shrine (Important Cultural Asset) is recognized around the world as a symbol of Japan. The current gate, the eighth built since the Heian Period, was completed in 1875. It is approximately 16m tall, and the horizontal part, called 'kasagi,' is approximately 24m long. The posts are made from camphor logs.               The Okusha (inner shrine) at Nikko Toshogu contains the tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Above the stone steps is Inuki Gate, behind which the pagoda containing the tomb is visible. Inukimon (Cast Gate) is thus named because its pillars and beams were cast from one mold.                       The approach to Ikuta Shinto Shrine taken around the turn of the 20th century. Formerly referred to as Ikuta-no-Baba, this was a scenic path lined with plum and cherry trees and stretching for about 870 meters from the shrine to the beach.
