This photo captures the area around the Oura River as viewed from mid-hill Mt. Donnoyama. At the mouth of the river stands Sagarimatsu Bridge, built in 1869 for the horse trail in the settlement. A bit upstream stands Benten Bridge built during the Bunkyu period (1861-1864) when the land was reclaimed for the Oura settlement. The U-shaped building visible next to Myogyoji Temple on the left hill is the Belle Vue Hotel. On the other side of the port is the Nagasaki Shipyard controlled by the Ministry of Engineering.       View of Nihonbashi River looking west, taken from Nihonbashi Bridge. The river is busy with cargo boats. Mt. Fuji was visible from this spot on clear days. The left side of the river is Nishi-gashi (west riverside), and the bridge visible in the far right is Nishi (West) Bridge. This was a transitional period when land transportation was replacing water transportation, but at this time the canal still played a major role in transporting goods.                 This is a scene of the Sakurababa and Irabayashi neighbourhoods near the fork of Nakashima River and Narutaki River (present-day Nakanohashi bridge). This scenery was given the poetic name Sakuraba Seiran (cherry blossom storm) and was known as one of the eight best scenes of Nagasaki. The road stretching from the centre of the photo to the left corner is the approach to Yasaka Shinto Shrine. Although the site would later become Maruyama Park, no work has been done yet, and a few restaurants stand in the area. A two-story Western-style building of yosemune-zukuri style stands on the northeast side of the street where cherry blossoms would later become a tourist attraction.                       This photo was taken some time during the period spanning the Bakumatsu - end of Meiji Period. Koshima Yojosho is standing in the middle of the photo. A hospital called Koshima Yojosho was built in May 1860 at Sako, Koshima-go, to treat commoners. In 1861, a medical school was built adjacent to the hospital.
