This panoramic photograph of central Nagasaki was taken from Mt. Kazagashira. This is the first of three panels (#5615-5617) showing the area from the elevation of Umegasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture Office and Nagasaki City Hall to the then high school (now Sakura-machi Primary School) and all the way to Suwa Shinto Shrine. The date is after 1893, because the re-routing of Nakashima River has been completed.             Like photograph #2276, this is a northern view from the entrance of Nakamise, the present location of Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate). The shopping area between Kaminarimon and Niomon is called Nakamise. Legend has it that the priests of Sensoji Temple asked the local people to keep the temple grounds clean and in return gave them permission to set up shops there. Buildings of brick construction were erected in 1885 in imitation of the Ginza Street.                       This photo is a panoramic view from Kotohira Shrine at Minamiyamate of the southern tip of the foreign settlement and the Naminohira area. The big building in the right foreground is Chintei Elementary school (later Naminohira Elementary School), a newly built and renamed school at the foot of Mr. Nabekanmuri. (Formerly known as Kozone Elementary School at a different location. Someone, possibly a teacher, is standing by the entrance. There are several boys and girls on the school ground.
