Viewing the Old Site of Nishi-Yakusho from the Old Site of Daitokuji Temple

This photo captures the old site of the Nishi-Yakusho of the former Nagasaki Bugyosho office (present-day Prefectural Office) over the Zenza river taken from the old site of Daitokuji Temple. What used to be the Nishi-Yakusho is now a vacant lot. The first Prefectural Office made of wood was built in July 1874. However, the building was destroyed soon by a typhoon on August 20 of the same year. Therefore, it is presumed that this photo was probably taken around 1873 before the construction of the first Prefectural Office building. The big white building on the left is the site of the present-day main office of Eighteen Bank. The area with foliage in the center is where the old Satsuma Domain residence used to be, but the main building is gone.           Main Hall and Worship Hall at Suwa Shrine

          The buildings starting from the right are, Worship Hall, Norito-den Hall, and the Main Hall at Suwa Shrine. Worship Hall is where commoners would worship. The building is made of hinoki (Japanese cypress) in irimoya-zukuri style (a hip-and- gable roof construction) with a hiwadabuki-style roof (Japanese cypress hinoki bark thatching). The right, left , and front walls flip open upwards like awnings. The tablet was written by Sawa Nobuyoshi who became the Kyushu Pacification Officer in 1868. The floor of the Norito-den Hall connected to the passageway is tatami-covered. The building in the far left is the main hall rebuilt in 1869 after burning down in 1857.               This photo has August 20, 1874 written on it. The foundry with two chimneys and the brick building with the boiler room which had started operation directly under the shogunate government in 1857 survived the typhoon. Another brick building, the lathe workshop with the first iron roof truss in Japan was not destroyed. The western-style building on the hill to the left is the dormitory for foreign staff built in April,1874.                 This is the front gate of National Nagasaki Normal School that had just been established in 1874. The former Nagasaki Bugyosho building on the left going through the gate and the newly built building on the right (the former governor’s residence) were the school buildings. In 1872 Tokyo Public Teachers College was established and thereafter teachers colleges were established across Japan.                   This panoramic photograph of central Nagasaki was taken from Mt. Kazagashira. This is the first of three panels (#5615-5617) showing the area from the elevation of Umegasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture Office and Nagasaki City Hall to the then high school (now Sakura-machi Primary School) and all the way to Suwa Shinto Shrine. The date is after 1893, because the re-routing of Nakashima River has been completed. This third panel depicts (from the left) the area from Sakura-machi to the former high school and Suwa Shinto Shrine.                     This photo is taken halfway up the Oura River looking downstream. The street light was particular to the foreign settlement. The bridge downstream is Benten Bridge and the mountain on the other side of Nagasaki Port is Mt. Inasa. A boat called ‘sanpan’, used to fetch goods from the ships offshore, is moored. The area, ‘Sagarimatsu’, was named after the pine tree on the left. The roof of Myogyoji Temple is barely discernable.                       This is a view from Mt. Kazagashira looking over the city centre and harbour. Land reclamation has progressed in the Shinchi area, and new buildings are being erected. But the old stone embankments still remain. Dejima Island and Dejima Bridge are visible along with Shin-Ohashi Bridge (built in 1869) and a white Western-style residence in Tsuki-machi. The date is 1871or 1872.
