Fingertip car ignition to help thwart car theft

TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Ltd. said Oct. 22 that it has developed an antitheft device using a finger vein verification system, as shown in this picture. The company says a vehicle equipped with the system can only be started by a driver whose finger vein pattern has been stored in the vehicle's computer. The system can also be used to automatically adjust the position of the driver's seat and the preferred temperature inside the car, it said. (Kyodo)

Drunk driver given 7 1/2-year term for accident killing 3 kids

FUKUOKA, Japan - Akio Ogami (R) and his wife Kaori, whose three children were killed in a car accident on Aug. 25, 2006, speak at a news conference in Fukuoka on Jan. 8 after the Fukuoka District Court sentenced former Fukuoka City official Futoshi Imabayashi to seven and a half years in prison over the accident. Nissan develops concept car to help prevent drunk driving

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a senor on the driver's seat (black part) which detects alcohol odor from a driver. Nissan Motor Co. unveiled on Aug. 3 a concept car equipped with such sensors to reduce drunk driving. When the driver is deemed to have consumed a certain level of alcohol, the transmission will be automatically locked, making it impossible to drive the car, the company said. (Kyodo)

Horiba Itech to release new in-vehicle recorder for accidents

OSAKA, Japan - Horiba Itech Co. said April 6 the system engineering company will release April 10 a type of in-vehicle equipment (in photo) that automatically captures a video recording of the scene when the car is involved in an accident. The recorder is attached with a small camera that starts recording when detecting a strong impact to the car and records the moving image for 15 seconds before and five seconds after the impact. Mazda succeeds in test run of fuel cell car

TOKYO, Japan - A prototype fuel cell vehicle developed by Mazda Motor Corp. runs during an open test drive at the company's research center in Yokohama on June 12. The five-seat vehicle, based on the Premacy small passenger car and powered by a methanol reformer fuel cell system, ran at a speed of around 30 kilometers per hour. The fuel cell system was developed jointly by Mazda and U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co.
