Horiba Itech to release new in-vehicle recorder for accidents

OSAKA, Japan - Horiba Itech Co. said April 6 the system engineering company will release April 10 a type of in-vehicle equipment (in photo) that automatically captures a video recording of the scene when the car is involved in an accident. The recorder is attached with a small camera that starts recording when detecting a strong impact to the car and records the moving image for 15 seconds before and five seconds after the impact. Golden hawk worth 10 mil. yen stolen

OSAKA, Japan - Photo shows an exquisite golden hawk that was stolen by three robbers wearing balaclavas from the Tomiya Gold precious metals shop in the city of Okayama on Jan. 29. Tomiya Corp., which runs the shop, said around 850 grams of gold was used to make the 28-centimeter-high hawk worth 10 million yen. Melamine detected in chocolates from China

OSAKA, Japan - The Osaka city government announced on Oct. 3 that the toxic substance melamine has been detected in ''Chocolate Pillows'' (photo) imported from China. A preliminary test showed that 54 parts per million of melamine were contained in the product imported by the Osaka-based company NS International Co., the city government said. (Kyodo)

Matsushita devises efficient fuel-cell cogeneration system

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said April 14 it has developed a fuel-cell cogeneration system with the highest efficiency of power generation. The system can convert up to 39 percent of energy, generated through a chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, into electricity during its peak power generation of 750 watts, Matsushita said. Sanyo releases world's 'lightest, smallest' videocam

TOKYO, Japan - Sanyo Electric Co. has released what it claims as the world's smallest and lightest high-definition video camera. The Xacti DMX - HD700 videocam, which weighs 189 grams and has a volume of 171 cc, will be put on the Japanese market on Oct. 19. The projected retail price is about 70,000 yen, the company says.
