S. Korean A-bomb survivor who sought unpaid medical fees dies

TOKYO, Japan - Lee Kang Young (photo), a South Korean atomic bomb survivor who filed a lawsuit in Japan over unpaid medical allowances, died on July 11 in a hospital in Busan, South Korea. He was 78. Lee, born in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, was exposed to radiation in the U.S. atomic bombing of Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, while he was working there as a forced laborer. This photo was taken in February, 2003.

Gov't to appeal ruling on damages for Taiwanese leprosy sufferer

TOKYO, Japan - Health minister Jiro Kawasaki speaks at a press conference at his office on Nov. 8 on a government decision to appeal a district court ruling that ordered the state to pay damages to a group of Taiwanese leprosy sufferers who had been segregated at a leprosarium during Japanese colonial rule. He said his ministry will ''swiftly consider about how to provide compensation for those who were at the leprosarium, apart from the trials.'' (Kyodo)

Sakaguchi supports changes for overseas A-bomb victims

TOKYO, Japan - Chikara Sakaguchi, minister of health, labor and welfare, tells reporters June 15 of the government's appeal the same day of a ruling ordering financial support for overseas survivors of the 1945 atomic bombings. Sakaguchi said that the Atomic Bomb Survivors Relief Law should be revised in the wake of the Osaka District Court ordering the prefectural government to pay medical expenses of a South Korean man who was exposed to radiation in the A-bombing of Hiroshima.

Ehime residents lose suit over gov't approval of nuke reactor

MATSUYAMA, Japan - A group of local residents walk into the Matsuyama District Court on Dec. 15 to hear the ruling on a lawsuit they filed to cancel the central government's 1977 approval of construction of a new reactor at Shikoku Electric Power Co.'s Ikata nuclear power plant in Ehime Prefecture, western Japan. The residents lost the lawsuit.

Supreme Court determines woman to be A-bomb victim
