Jiro Fukushima, male lover of Mishima, dies at 76

KUMAMOTO, Japan - Jiro Fukushima (in file photo), a writer who revealed his homosexual relationship with late novelist Yukio Mishima, died of pancreatic cancer on Feb. 22 at a hospital in Kumamoto Prefecture, his family said. He was 76. Fukushima authored a book depicting his affair with Mishima. The bereaved family of Mishima, however, filed a lawsuit, seeking a ban on further publication of the book which initially hit the shelves in March 1998, and Fukushima lost the court battle in November 2000. Award-winning writer Miyoshi dies at 76

MORIOKA, Japan - Award-winning writer Kyozo Miyoshi (file photo taken in Feb. 1977) died of a stroke May 11 at a hospital in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture, his family said. He was 76. Miyoshi, whose real name was Hisao Sasaki, published ''Kosodate Gokko'' (Play Nurturing), based on his experiences as a teacher at small, remote schools, which won the prestigious Naoki literary award in 1977.

Niimi, lawyer who fought for Chinese laborers' rights, dies at 59

TOKYO, Japan - Takashi Niimi (in undated file photo), a human rights lawyer who represented the rights of Chinese nationals who were forced to work at a labor camp in Akita Prefecture during World War II, died of cardiac failure on Dec. 20, his family said. He was 59. Niimi, a Nagoya native, led a five-year court battle against major Japanese construction firm Kajima Corp. through November 2000 over a 60.5 million yen damages suit filed by 11 of the survivors.

Former Tokyo Gov. Yukio Aoshima dies at 74

TOKYO, Japan - Former Tokyo Gov. Yukio Aoshima (file photo) died Dec. 20 of myelodysplastic syndrome, a blood disorder, at a hospital in Tokyo, his family said. He was 74. Aoshima was also active as a scriptwriter, an actor, novelist and a Diet member during his lifetime.

Popular children's writer Kenjiro Haitani dies at 72

TOKYO, Japan - Kenjiro Haitani (file photo taken in January, 2005), a popular author who cheered up children through his books including ''A Rabbit's Eyes,'' dies of esophageal cancer at a hospital in Shizuoka Prefecture on Nov. 23. He was 72.

Nagano court dismisses damages suit over Chinese forced laborers

NAGANO, Japan - The Nagano District Court dismissed on March 10 a damages suit filed by a group of former Chinese laborers, and family members of those already deceased, who were forced to work under harsh conditions at a construction site in Nagano Prefecture during World War II. After rejecting the plaintiffs' demand for 140 million yen in compensation, Presiding Judge Jiro Tsuji took the unusual step of offering a personal observation, ''Preceding generations did some terrible things, and I wish I could offer (the plaintiffs) some relief.''
