Yamaha Motor employees arrested over chopper export to China

HAMAMATSU, Japan - Kazuo Uchiyama, 58, an executive board member and head of the aeronautic operations division of Yamaha Motor Co., on his way to work from his home in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture on Feb. 23 morning. Later in the day, he and two of his deputies were arrested by Shizuoka police on suspicion of attempting to export without authorization an unmanned helicopter to China authorities say can be converted to military use. Company unaware exporting sensitive devices was illegal

KAWASAKI, Japan - Kazusaku Tezuka, president of high-tech precision instruments maker Mitutoyo Corp., denies at a press conference that the company had knowingly engaged in illegal exports of machinery that may be converted for use in nuclear weapons production. Police raided the company the previous day on suspicion of exporting three-dimension precision-measuring machines, which could be used to make centrifuge machines to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons to China and Thailand around 2001 and 2002 without authorization from the government.
