3 Laotians arrested over false registration of baby girl's birth

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Douangbouppha Thong Inh (in photo), a Laotian, his wife and a female compatriot living with the couple in Ayase, Kanagawa Prefecture, were arrested on May 12 on suspicion of falsely registering the birth of a baby girl in 2007. The baby was born to the woman living with the couple, but the couple registered the baby as their own in a bid to prevent the husband, who had overstayed his visa, from being deported. (Kyodo)

H7 bird flu strain detected in Aichi

TOYOHASHI, Japan - Officials of the Aichi prefectural government inspect a quail farm in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, on Feb. 27, where the H7 bird flu virus has been detected. The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry and the local government said this is the first reported detection of the strain in Japan since 1925. However, they added that the virus ''may be of attenuated virulence,'' as the infected quails have not died, suggesting the infection is unlikely to spread further. (Kyodo)

NAHA, Japan - Plaintiffs in a damages suit over noise from the U.S. Kadena Air Base in Okinawa Prefecture show mixed reactions in Naha to a ruling the Fukuoka High Court handed down Feb. 27. Algerian detained in France returns to Japan after over 4 yrs
