First settlement reached in hepatitis damages suits against stat

FUKUOKA, Japan - A total of 29 hepatitis C sufferers suing the state and drugmakers for damages settled suits with the state in Osaka and Fukuoka on Feb. 4, the first such settlement among a series of similar lawsuits filed by about 240 people nationwide since 2002. Nagano court dismisses damages suit over Chinese forced laborers

NAGANO, Japan - The Nagano District Court dismissed on March 10 a damages suit filed by a group of former Chinese laborers, and family members of those already deceased, who were forced to work under harsh conditions at a construction site in Nagano Prefecture during World War II. After rejecting the plaintiffs' demand for 140 million yen in compensation, Presiding Judge Jiro Tsuji took the unusual step of offering a personal observation, ''Preceding generations did some terrible things, and I wish I could offer (the plaintiffs) some relief.'' Park inside U.S. Kadena base in Okinawa opens to locals

NAHA, Japan - The Okinawa Friendship Plaza, a park built recently in the U.S. military's Kadena Air Base in Okinawa Prefecture, is open to the public, Okinawa Mayor Masakazu Nakasone announced July 31. Visitors will be allowed entry to the plaza (shown in this photo taken July 18), which covers about 1,600 square meters, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The park is aimed at helping promote friendship between city residents and U.S. military personnel, and also serves as a buffer zone between the base and its surrounding area.

Class-action suit seeks ban on night flights at Kadena base

NAHA, Japan - People living near the U.S. Kadena air base in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, stage a protest rally before entering the Naha District Court on March 27. More than 5,500 people living near the base filed a joint lawsuit against the Japanese government, claiming damages for noise pollution and seeking a ban on night flights. The group is demanding compensation of more than 6 billion yen. The banner reads, ''Give us back our quiet nights.''
