            OSAKA, Japan - Firetruck maker Morita Corp. has launched a flower-shaped fire extinguisher (ih handout photo) that can be used to put out fires in pans for cooking fried food such as tempura. The ''petals'' of the ''firefighting flower'' contain a fire-extinguishing substance and douse flames when placed inside a boiling pot of oil. A magnet is placed inside the ''stem'' part so that the extinguisher can be kept on a refrigerator or the like for convenience. (Kyodo)

                OSAKA, Japan - Hitachi Zosen Corp. and CPR Co. said on June 12 they will jointly produce biodegradable plastic from cassava (in photo), a plant grown in the tropics. The major shipbuilder and the Hyogo Prefecture-based maker of eco-friendly products believe the new plastic could become a cheaper alternative to conventional plastics made from petroleum-derived naphtha besides being less harmful to the environmental.                   TOKYO, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. said Oct. 11 it will unveil the Fine-X (in handout photo), a new concept model for environmentally friendly fuel-cell hybrid vehicles that emit only water, at the Tokyo Motor Show beginning on Oct. 22. The vehicle employs Toyota's fuel-cell hybrid system that requires chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen as fuel to generate electricity. It also features unusually smooth drive thanks to ''four-wheel independent drive control and large, steering angle mechanism,'' the carmaker said. (Kyodo)

                    Honda devises fuel-efficient 1.8-liter engine for Civic

                    TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. said July 5 it has developed a new 1.8-liter engine (in photo) which is one of the most fuel-efficient engines of its class in the world. The 1.8/i-VTEC engine will be mounted in the new Civic passenger car model Honda will put on the market this fall. The engine is based on Honda's intelligent VTEC (variable valve timing and lift electronic control) system that switches the valve timing for maximum efficiency during ignition and acceleration to achieve a powerful torque, and then delays intake valve closure during cruising and other low-load conditions for improved fuel economy, the automaker said.
