Author Junzo Shono dies at 88

TOKYO, Japan - Junzo Shono (in this undated file photo), an eminent author and a member of the Japan Art Academy, died of age on Sept. 21, 2009, at his home in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, people close to him said on Sept. 22. He was 88. A native of Osaka, Shono began writing novels after World War II and won the Akutagawa Award in 1955 for his book titled ''Purusaido shokei (Poolside Scene).'' (Kyodo)

Early-morning subway accident disrupts Tokyo commute

TOKYO, Japan - Tokyo Metro Co. employees check on a passenger train at Toyocho Station on the Tozai Line which a railway maintenance train bumped into in the early morning of Sept. 9, 2009. JAL's maintenance error causes fall of 2 panels from plane

Extended Tohoku Shinkansen line to feature super deluxe cabins

TOKYO, Japan - An artist's impression of a super deluxe ''Green Car'' cabin of a new shinkansen super-express train that East Japan Railway Co. plans to introduce on the extended Tohoku Shinkansen line by the end of fiscal 2010. According to JR East, the super deluxe ''Green Car'' will seat up to 18 passengers and will boast the same level of comfort as a first-class cabin on an airliner. The new Tohoku Shinkansen line, to be extended to Shin-Aomori station in Aomori Prefecture, will allow a maximum speed of 320 kilometers per hour when in commercial operation. (Kyodo)

Ex-Itochu chairman Sejima dies at 95

TOKYO, Japan - Ryuzo Sejima (file photo taken in 1997), an Imperial Headquarters staffer-turned-Itochu Corp. chairman, died of old age on Sept. 4 at his Tokyo home. He was 95. While Itochu chairman, Sejima played a major role in privatizing Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corp. and the Japan National Railways as a member of the government's commission on administrative reform. He was also known for his close ties with former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone.

New train car for royal family and state guests unveiled

TOKYO, Japan - East Japan Railway Co. unveiled to the press in Tokyo on July 23 a newly-made train that comprises a special train car to be used by the royal family and state guests and five quality cars for use by tourists. 26 injured in train derailment in Okayana Pref.

OKAYAMA, Japan - A two-car train lies on its side on West Japan Railway Co.'s Tsuyama line in Okayama, Okayama Prefecture, on Nov. 19. All its 25 passengers and driver were injured in the accident, fire department officials said. Of them, three were taken to hospital but there is no threat to their lives, they said. (Kyodo)
