High court upholds ruling favoring Korean A-bomb victim

FUKUOKA, Japan - Supporters of Choi Gye Chol, a South Korean atomic-bomb victim who died in July 2004, welcome a high court ruling on Sept. 26 upholding a lower court ruling stating atomic-bomb survivors living abroad do not need to visit Japan when they apply for healthcare benefits. Choi's daughter (C) holds a picture of her father in front of the Fukuoka High Court. Choi filed a lawsuit in February 2004, seeking nullification of Nagasaki government's decision to reject his application for an allowance. Gov't appeals court decision over Isahaya

TOKYO, Japan - People stage a sit-in in front of the farm ministry in Tokyo on July 10 after the Japanese government appealed a district court ruling that ordered the state to open the Isahaya Bay dike in Nagasaki Prefecture, citing concerns that opening it will expose the area to risks of high tides which would damage farming business on the reclaimed land there. High court certifies 9 as A-bomb illness sufferers

OSAKA, Japan - Plaintiffs rejoice at a press conference after the Osaka High Court on May 30 certified nine people as sufferers of illnesses from radiation as a result of the 1945 U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The court declared illegal the government's decisions not to grant certification to them.
