People Staff to let robots care for seniors, work as receptionis

NAGOYA, Japan - An employee of People Staff Co. shows off two robots at a press conference on Jan. 25. The company said it will begin offering them for use in the care of residents of homes for the aged or to work as receptionists at offices in February. Yorisoi ifbot (L) quizzes seniors in order to prevent them from becoming senile while Kitty Robo (R) greets a visitor with a voiced message upon recognizing him or her with a sensor and transmits the image and voice of the visitor to the computer of a user in another room. The service is the first of its kind by a staffing service company, according to the Nagoya-based firm. (Kyodo)

N. Korean delegation visits Chongryun headquarters

TOKYO, Japan - So Man Sul (2nd from R), first deputy chairman of the pro-Pyongyang General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryun), welcomes members of a visiting North Korean delegation to Chongryun's headquarters in Tokyo on Aug. 23. The delegation, headed by North Korean Ambassador Jong Thae Hwa (2nd from L), is negotiating the establishment of diplomatic ties with Japan. About 300 Chongryun members waved the North Korean flag and cheered as the guests entered the compound in Chiyoda Ward.

Ex-LDP Vice President Nikaido dies at 90

TOKYO, Japan - Susumu Nikaido, a former vice president of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), dies of heart failure at a Tokyo hospital at 90. Nikaido, a close aide to late Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka, played a key role in restoring Japan-China diplomatic ties in 1972.
