Venture firm unveils robotics-based music player

TOKYO, Japan - ZMP Inc. demonstrates the robotics-based music player, dubbed ''miuro,' at a presentation in Tokyo on Sept. 8. The miuro, which is sandwiched between a set of wheels and is 22 centimeters high and 34 cm wide, can automatically move to a place designated by the user via remote control device or mobile phone. KDDI to sell Sony's Walkman brand mobile phone next month

TOKYO, Japan - KDDI Corp. will launch Sony Corp.'s Walkman brand mobile phone (photo) that can be used as a music player in Japan by the end of June, the company said on May 22. The new phone can play music for 30 hours on a single charge as it utilizes Sony's portable music player technology. Developed by KDDI and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, the handset can store up to about 630 songs. (Kyodo)

Hitachi robot navigates its way to take images

TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Ltd. said on March 7 it has developed a robot (in handout photo) that moves indoors negotiating its way around obstacles and uses a surveillance camera to take images. The robot, which measures 57 centimeters high and 50 cm wide and weighs 33 kilograms, is powered by a battery to travel at a speed of one kilometer per hour on two tire wheels. The company said the robot can detect more things as compared with one with a surveillance camera fixed onto one spot. (Kyodo)

NTT DoCoMo's new cell phones used as walkie-talkies

TOKYO, Japan - Models holds up NTT DoCoMo Inc.'s new 902i series of 3G FOMA mobile phone handsets during a presentation in Tokyo on Oct. 19. Nikon develops digital camera with built-in wireless LAN

TOKYO, Japan - Nikon Corp. has developed what it says is the world's first digital camera with a built-in function allowing users to transmit image data wirelessly to printers and personal computers. The Coolpix P1 -- 9.1 centimeters by 6.0 cm by 3.9 cm -- can transmit image data to a PC up to 30 meters away from the user, Nikon said, adding that it will put the camera on the market Sept. 23 for about 50,000 yen. Fukuoka firm to offer interpretation for World Cup visitors

FUKUOKA, Japan - Tisco Japan Inc. said May 2 it will begin interpretation services for foreign visitors traveling to Japan and South Korea before and during the World Cup soccer finals. Interpretation will be provided from Japanese into four languages, and from Korean to eight languages using a dedicated mobile phone and a special device rented at major airports in both co-host countries. A user needs to call Tisco's call center via the hands-free speaker phone and speak through the device to an interpreter at the center, who will offer interpretation services via the device. The phone/device kit costs 1,470 yen per day and interpretation services are offered at 390 yen per minute.

Robot fish unveiled

A sea bream swimming in a water tank is not a real one but a robot developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. Measuring 60 centimeters long and weighing 2.6 kilograms, it swims at a speed of 25 cm per second on a set of built-in batteries embedded inside the body. Mitsubishi says the robot, that costs ''between tens and hundreds million yen'' including a tank and remote-control device, will be made available in other fish species. ==Kyodo
