United Way Mumbai, a non-profit organization, on Sunday distributed essential kits to Mumbai's dabbawalas as a part of the COVID-19 response.
Known by their white kurta uniform and traditional Gandhi cap, dabbawalas refer to the workers who deliver cooked food to office-goers in Mumbai by picking up the tiffin from their respective homes.
With support from HSBC Bank, United Way Mumbai has been distributing 1,270 essential kits weighing 35 kg with various items such as rice, pulses, oil, toiletries, etc., sufficient for a family of five, every month for the last seven months.
The NGO has been working with the dabbawalas to provide ration kits amongst other items such as new bicycles for delivering lunch boxes, health insurance, smartphones and tablets for their children to continue their s
