The Asian elephant is a national first-class protected animal in China. Yunnan province is currently the "home" of the country's wild Asian elephants.
In March 2020, a herd of wild elephants left their forest habitat in Yunnan, southwestern China. They trekked about 500 km in their adventure, before they safely returned to their nature reserve 17 months later.
