Tokyo's Nihombashi bridge to see light again with expressway removal

Operation is under way to remove the elevated expressway over the historic Nihombashi bridge in Tokyo on June 24, 2022. Nihombashi bridge will see the light of day again in fiscal 2040 in a 320 billion yen ($2.3 billion) renewal project with work commencing to remove the expressway.

              The construction cost was not disclosed, but it is estimated to be several percent higher than the usual cost of about 600 million yen.                 Professor Masatoshi Ishikawa of the University of Tokyo and Omron have developed a robot hand that can perform precision work by groping at a speed of 1,000 times per second. When the ring hits the end of the cylinder and the angle shifts, the robot adjusts its three fingers to restore the shift. This is a high-speed reproduction of the way a human being searches for the right angle to fit a ring using the senses of his or her fingertips.                   On April 21, JR East opened its first shared office store, "STATION DESK Tokyo Marunouchi," in Tokyo Station. It is located near the south ticket gate of Marunouchi Station and occupies a former office of approximately 50 square meters. The 16 seats are available by reservation only, with six types of seating available to suit different work styles. The office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with wireless LAN, power supply, and tea machines available. For the time being, the fee is 150 yen per 15 minutes, excluding tax. JR East has been operating "Station Booths," box-type shared offices in four stations in Tokyo, and plans to increase the number of locations to 30 in fiscal 2020.
