Jiang praises flood fighting efforts
Chinese President Jiang Zemin, in a speech at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Sept. 28, hails the success of flood fighting and disaster relief efforts during the country's worst flooding in decades. The floods this summer on the Yangtze River and on the Nengjiang and Songhua rivers in northeast China took more than 3,000 lives and affected another 233 million nationwide. Direct economic losses are estimated at 20.3 billion dollars.
