Remembering lost loved ones
Mourners drop flowers into the sea on Nov. 28 at the second government-sponsored memorial service for the more than 1,500 civilians who died when their evacuation ship sank after being torpedoed by a U.S. submarine during World War II. The ceremony was held on a ferry in the East China Sea, 10 kilometers northwest of Akuseki Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, where the Tsushima Maru sank on Aug. 22, 1944.
