Indonesia, Portugal agree on E. Timor referendum
Portuguese Foreign Minister Jaime da Gama (R), U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan (second from R), and Indonesian Foreign Minister Ali Alatas (L of Annan) hold a press conference at the U.N. headquarters in New York on March 11 to announce that Indonesia and Portugal have agreed to hold a direct referendum in East Timor on the question of autonomy or independence for the former Portuguese colony.
