Toshiba begins production of new LCDs

Commercial production of next-generation liquid crystal displays (LCDs) featuring sharp images comparable with those of color photos gets under way at Toshiba Corp.'s Fukaya factory, north of Tokyo. The display has adopted state-of-the-art liquid crystal technology called the low-temperature polysilicon thin film transistor (TFT). Toshiba said it is the first in the world to produce such LCDs on a commercial basis. This photo was taken June 18.

The Osaka-based electronics company said the same day it has developed a technology to make higher resolution images on organic electroluminescence display panels for smartphones and other electronics products. The technology involves use of indium-gallium-zinc oxide semiconductors, a new material which Sharp already employs to increase the picture definition on its mass-produced liquid crystal display panels.

Sharp unveils multiscreen display

TOKYO, Japan - A new multiscreen display system consisting of 60-inch liquid crystal display monitors installed on a wall and floor is unveiled by Sharp Corp. during a presentation in Tokyo on June 7, 2010. The gap between the panels in the display system is only 6.5 millimeters, which Sharp claims is the smallest in the world. The photo was taken with a fisheye lens.

Sony to launch next-generation OEL flat-screen TV this year

Toshiba to launch HD DVD-equipped laptop in mid-May

TOKYO, Japan - Toshiba Corp. said April 10 it will launch in Japan in mid-May the world's first notebook computer equipped with a next-generation DVD drive. The Qosmio G30/697HS, with an HD DVD drive and a 17-inch high-definition liquid crystal monitor, is expected to sell for about 400,000 yen, Toshiba officials said.
