2002 IWC meeting to be held in Shimonoseki

ADELAIDE, Australia - Kiyoshi Ejima, mayor of Shimonoseki City in Japan's Yamaguchi Prefecture, meets the press in Adelaide, Australia, on July 6 after the International Whaling Commission (IWC) decided to hold the 54th annual meeting in Shimonoseki in 2002. Shimonoseki, located at the western tip of Japan's largest island, Honshu, was a base for Japan's whaling industry until the 1980s. The fisheries company which owned the professional baseball club the Taiyo Whales, the predecessor of the Yokohama BayStars, was based in the city until 1949.

    SHIMONOSEKI, Japan - Heated debate continues on the second day of the five-day annual plenary meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on May 21. The IWC voted down Japan's proposal that its four local whaling communities be allowed to catch 50 minke whales, and Iceland walked out of the meeting after a majority of IWC members on Monday voted down the country's bid to rejoin the body because of its reservation against the 1982 moratorium on commercial whaling.
