Miyakejima's Mt. Oyama erupts again, sends smoke 8 km high
MIYAKE, Japan - People watch as Mt. Oyama on the island of Miyakejima erupts again Aug. 29, sending black smoke about 8 km into the air. A local meteorological observatory said the eruption started at around 4:35 a.m. and called on residents to be on alert. The 813-meter volcano, some 200 kilometers south of Tokyo, has erupted several times this summer, with the last burst occurring Aug. 28 on a small scale. Smoke from the recent eruptions is streaming into Kanagawa Prefecture through Sagami Bay.
