Scorching weather hits eastern Japan

TOKYO, Japan - Scorching weather prevails throughout eastern Japan on Sept. 2, with the mercury nearing 40 C in some parts as hot, humid air streamed into the Japanese archipelago from the south. Central Tokyo registered 37.8 C, this year's highest and unusual for this time of the season. Photo was taken at 2:20 p.m. Sept. 2 in Tokyo's Ginza district.

      SAPPORO, Japan - A late summer heat wave hits Sapporo on Sept. 21, with the temperature soaring to 31.1 C in late morning. According to the Sapporo weather observatory, this is the first time since weather observations began in 1879 that the temperature topped 30 C this late in the summer. The previous record was logged 86 years ago, on Sept. 18, 1921, when the mercury in Sapporo touched 30.1 C.         TOKYO, Japan - Pedestrians swelter under the scorching sun in Tokyo's posh Ginza district on July 20 as an unprecedented heat wave hit the metropolis, with the mercury climbing to an all-time high for the capital at 39.5 C shortly before 1 p.m., topping the previous record of 39.1 C recorded Aug. 3, 1994.
