Lawmaker Yamamoto arrested for alleged fraud

TOKYO, Japan - File photo shows Joji Yamamoto, a House of Representatives member of the largest opposition Democratic Party of Japan, who was arrested on Sept. 4 by prosecutors on suspicion of fraud in connection with his alleged misuse of a total of 20 million yen of his former secretary's state-paid salary. Yamamoto, 37, who represents Tokyo's No. 21 electoral district, has denied the allegation, investigative sources said. He left the DPJ shortly before his arrest.

DPJ's Nishimura arrested for violating Attorneys Law

OSAKA, Japan - Shingo Nishimura, a House of Representatives member of the opposition Democratic Party of Japan, leaves his home in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, on Nov. 28 to head for the Osaka prefectural police headquarters. Nishimura was later arrested for allegedly allowing a former employee at his law office to use his name as a lawyer in violation of the Attorneys Law.

TOKYO, Japan - Kenji Kobayashi (in file photo), a former House of Representatives member from the Democratic Party of Japan, was arrested on Sept. 18 on suspicion of possessing stimulant drugs. Kobayashi, 41, lost his Diet seat in the Sept. 11 general election.

Ex-state minister Komoto dies

TOKYO, Japan - Former state minister Toshio Komoto (file photo), a heavyweight in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party during the 1970s and early 1980s, died of heart failure May 24. He was 89. Komoto, who was elected to the House of Representatives 17 times since 1949 from Hyogo Prefecture, retired from politics in 1996 for health reasons.

LDP heavyweight Murakami to quit Diet over scandal

TOKYO, Japan - Ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) heavyweight member Masakuni Murakami (file photo) has decided to quit the House of Councillors over his links to scandal-hit mutual aid foundation KSD, from which he allegedly received massive financial support, LDP sources said Feb. 22. Murakami conveyed his decision to senior members of an LDP faction to which he belongs during a meeting the same day.

TOKYO, Japan - Former House of Councillors member Takao Koyama (file photo) is indicted Feb. 6 on charges of accepting 20 million yen in bribes from the scandal-hit mutual-aid foundation KSD. Koyama left the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Jan. 16 and quit as a lawmaker Jan. 29.

LP, DPJ execs meet to beef up fight against ruling camp

Prosecutors seek to grill Koyama over KSD scandal

Former lawmaker Nakajima found hanged at home

TOKYO, Japan - Former House of Representatives lawmaker Yojiro Nakajima (file photo), who was convicted of vote-buying and fraud, was found hanged at his home in Tokyo's Meguro Ward on Jan. 6. Nakajima, 41, was given a two-year prison term last September for defrauding the state of about 10 million yen, money that was given to him from tax funds to pay for a secretary. He had appealed the Tokyo High Court decision to the Supreme Court.
