Japan Coast Guard unveils high-speed patrol boat
TOKYO, Japan - The Japan Coast Guard on Feb. 22 unveiled the Tsurugi, the first of three high-speed patrol boats the government commissioned after Japanese warships and coast guard vessels failed to stop a North Korean spy ship following a chase at sea in 1999. The 220-ton, 50-meter-long vessel, displayed to the press at Tokyo Bay off Haneda, is equipped with three engines and is capable of a top speed of more than 40 knots or some 74 kilometers per hour.
