Centenarian twin Gin-san dies at 108 in Nagoya

NAGOYA, Japan - File photo shows Gin Kanie, one of two twin sisters, who died of old age in the early hours of Feb. 28 at her home in Nagoya. She was 108. The popular twin was nicknamed Gin-san. Her health had deteriorated since her sister Kin Narita, known as Kin-san, died in January last year at age 107.

Uno, a Tokyo native, was a member of the National Language Council and one of the scholars delegated by the government to name the current imperial era (Heisei) following the end of the Showa era after the death in January 1989 of Emperor Hirohito, who is posthumously known as Emperor Showa.

        NAGOYA, Japan - Two relatives of Gin Kanie, the celebrity twin who died of natural causes Feb. 28 at age 108, burn incense for her in a funeral in central Japan's Nagoya on March 2. About 100 mourners turned out to pay their respects to Kanie, who was known simply as ''Gin-san.'' Her twin sister Kin Narita, called ''Kin-san,'' died in January 2000 at age 107.

              NAGOYA, Japan - The Aichi prefectural government has found a so-called health drink imported from China (photo) contains an active ingredient of the anti-impotence drug Viagra and directed the importer in Nagoya to recall the product, officials said Feb. 8. The importer, ASG in Nagoya's Meito Ward, imported 47,000 20-milliliter bottles of the drink from China between February last year and January and has sold 43,000 bottles, mostly in drugstores in Aichi and other prefectures.

                TOKYO, Japan - Former House of Representatives lawmaker Yojiro Nakajima (file photo), who was convicted of vote-buying and fraud, was found hanged at his home in Tokyo's Meguro Ward on Jan. 6. Nakajima, 41, was given a two-year prison term last September for defrauding the state of about 10 million yen, money that was given to him from tax funds to pay for a secretary. He had appealed the Tokyo High Court decision to the Supreme Court.

                  NAGOYA, Japan - A funeral service for Kin Narita, who was one of Japan's oldest twin sisters, is held at a memorial hall in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, on Jan. 26.
