Japan Telecom to begin Web access service via home phones

TOKYO, Japan - A man demonstrates in Tokyo on May 21 how to browse the World Wide Web with a fixed-line telephone through a Japan Telecom Co. service to be launched July 13. J-web will enable users to access the Web without personal computers or Internet provider connections by using home phones equipped with liquid crystal displays.

KDDI cellphones to be used to pay fares at JR East stations

TOKYO, Japan - A model demonstrates how a mobile phone handset is used to pay train fares at a press conference at a Tokyo hotel on July 11. Subscribers to KDDI Corp.'s ''au'' mobile phone service will be able to pay train fares with their handsets at East Japan Railway Co. stations starting in January 2006, the two companies said. JR East will allow its Suica electronic train fare card functions to be installed on Internet-capable mobile phone handsets for use with KDDI's EZ FeliCa service to be launched in September in combination with Sony Corp.'s FeliCa contactless integrated-circuit card technology.

(1) KDDI unveils new cell phone

TOKYO, Japan - KDDI Corp. President Tadashi Onodera shows off a new cellular photo at a news conference in Tokyo on Oct. 22. KDDI said that starting Nov. 28 it will offer a new service enabling users of its ''au'' mobile phone service to transmit and receive data at a speed equivalent to that provided by an asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) connection. KDDI said it will introduce a flat rate for packet transmission, giving users of the new service unlimited access to the Internet for a fee of 4,200 yen a month.

Tokyo venture to launch world's 1st IP mobile phone service

TOKYO, Japan - IP Talk Corp., a Tokyo telecom venture, said Oct. 6 it will start providing Internet protocol (IP) mobile telephone services on such devices as that shown in photo in March next year. The service will allow free calls between subscribers and charge extremely low rates for calls to fixed-line numbers and overseas.

5 carriers file suit over NTT connection fee hike

TOKYO, Japan - The presidents of five telecommunications carriers -- KDDI Corp., Japan Telecom Co., Poweredcom Inc., Cable & Wireless IDC Inc. and Fusion Communications Corp. -- hold a joint press conference in Tokyo on July 17 after filing a suit with the Tokyo District Court against the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications over the ministry's approval of a hike in connection fees they pay to Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT).

Fuji Photo Film develops new digital camera prototype

TOKYO, Japan - A digital camera prototype (photo) unveiled July 16 by Fuji Photo Film Co. gives users easier access to printers and personal computers through wireless local area networks (LANs). The prototype features 3 million pixels and a LAN card with a transmission capacity of 11 megabits per second.

NTT-ME to start cut-rate IP phone service for ADSL subscribers

TOKYO, Japan - NTT-ME Corp., a Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. arm, said June 28 it will offer a new type of Internet-based phone service for subscribers of the NTT group's asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) service without charging them for the length of phone calls, starting in September. Those ADSL subscribers will be asked to pay only a monthly basic fee of some 1,100 yen if the subscribers talk to each other through compact phone handsets connected to personal computers.

TEPCO hopes to challenge NTT dominance in Internet access

TOKYO, Japan - Nobuya Minami, president of Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), speaks in a recent interview with Kyodo News in Tokyo. Minami said TEPCO hopes to check the dominance of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) in Japan's telecom market by launching its own high-speed optical fiber Internet access service.

NTT let i-mode users buy soft drinks, services without cash

TOKYO, Japan - A woman demonstrates in Tokyo on Sept. 3 how to buy a soft drink from a special vending machine using an ''i-mode'' Internet-capable mobile phone. NTT DoCoMo Inc. began a trial service to allow users of ''i-mode'' phones to buy soft drinks and get discount tickets for various services from special vending machines, called ''Cmo,'' by using i-mode terminals as a sort of prepaid card.
