NTT DoCoMo begins trial 3G cell phone service

TOKYO, Japan - An NTT DoCoMo Inc. employee holds a new handset on which Japan's largest mobile phone operator began trial third-generation (3G) mobile phone services in the Tokyo metropolitan area May 30. The world's first 3G mobile phone service to collect phone charges involves the free distribution of 4,500 handsets to participants in the trial to last till Sept. 30 in Tokyo's 23 wards and limited areas in Yokohama and Kawasaki, both Kanagawa Prefecture.

TOKYO, Japan - KDDI Corp. said May 23 it will release five new handsets for third-generation mobile phone services, including video cellphones, from mid-June. The five handsets for KDDI's ''au'' service include the W32SA and the A5511T that can be used to watch TV programs.

TOKYO, Japan - NTT DoCoMo Inc. said March 26 it has developed the world's first wristwatch-style personal handy-phone system (PHS) mobile phone (top). The WRISTOMO, whose name is a fusion of wrist and mobile, fits the user's wrist when folded and looks like a regular digital watch. When two buttons above and below the watch face are pressed, it opens up into a PHS handset (bottom L and R). The company will market the phone on the Internet, possibly in April for between 30,000 yen and 40,000 yen.

NTT DoCoMo releases new mobile phone handset

TOKYO, Japan - NTT DoCoMo Inc. on March 14 released a new mobile phone handset (in photo) compatible with both the existing wireless service and the third-generation service called FOMA. Weighing 130 grams, the N2701 is equipped with two cameras and enables users to talk continuously for up to 120 minutes, company officials said. Its price has yet to be decided.
