SHIZUOKA, Japan - Workers begin dismantling a radar station dome at the summit of Mt. Fuji on Sept. 5. The Japan Meteorological Agency stopped using the radar located on the 3,776-meter summit in November 1999. Built in 1964, the Mt. Fuji radar had a superb ability to detect typhoons many kilometers away and a lot faster than ordinary radar. Its functions have been replaced by the agency's Himawari satellite and a new radar in the area.

      SHIZUOKA, Japan - Work to dismantle the dome on a radar station at the summit of Mt. Fuji proceeded Sept. 5 and is expected to finish within the day if weather permits. Since it became outmoded, the radar's functions have been replaced by the Japan Meteorological Agency's Himawari satellite and a new radar in the area.
