Dismantling of Mt. Fuji radar dome proceeding

SHIZUOKA, Japan - Work to dismantle the dome on a radar station at the summit of Mt. Fuji proceeded Sept. 5 and is expected to finish within the day if weather permits. Since it became outmoded, the radar's functions have been replaced by the Japan Meteorological Agency's Himawari satellite and a new radar in the area.

FUJI, Japan - The last batch of Japan Meteorological Agency staff members leaves the weather station atop Mr. Fuji on Oct. 1, after the facility that had been regularly staffed since 1932 was fully automated. The automation of the facility on the 3,776-meter peak will eliminate the risk and hardship the people stationed there faced.

        MT. FUJI, Japan - Kesao Takizawa, head of the Japan Meteorological Agency's weather station atop Mr. Fuji, checks the facility on Oct. 1. The agency pulled out its last employees from the station, automating the facility that had been regularly staffed since 1932. ''I find it hard to leave. But at the same time, I am relieved that our staff members will not have to endure harsh work atop the mountain,'' Takizawa said.

          SHIZUOKA, Japan - Workers begin dismantling a radar station dome at the summit of Mt. Fuji on Sept. 5. The Japan Meteorological Agency stopped using the radar located on the 3,776-meter summit in November 1999. Built in 1964, the Mt. Fuji radar had a superb ability to detect typhoons many kilometers away and a lot faster than ordinary radar. Its functions have been replaced by the agency's Himawari satellite and a new radar in the area.
