Kaoru Hasuike visits city facilities before starting work

KASHIWAZAKI, Japan - Kaoru (L) and Yukiko (R) Hasuike, repatriated from North Korea after being abducted in 1978, begin a tour of public facilities run by his hometown of Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, with a visit to a nursing care center for children and the elderly on Jan. 14. Kaoru plans to start working at the city government office in February.

Former abductees' family marks 10th year of reunion

TOKYO, Japan - Children of two Japanese couples are about to fly from Pyongyang's international airport to Japan in May 2004. They are (from R in front row) Kiyoshi Chimura, Emi Chimura, Shigeyo Hasuike and Yasuhiko Chimura (L in back), and Katsuya Hasuike (R in back). Their parents were abducted by North Korean agents and repatriated to Japan.

N. Korean defectors in Japan

Actor Watanabe visits quake-hit areas

People Staff to let robots care for seniors, work as receptionists

NAGOYA, Japan - An employee of People Staff Co. shows off two robots at a press conference on Jan. 25. The company said it will begin offering them for use in the care of residents of homes for the aged or to work as receptionists at offices in February. Yorisoi ifbot (L) quizzes seniors in order to prevent them from becoming senile while Kitty Robo (R) greets a visitor with a voiced message upon recognizing him or her with a sensor and transmits the image and voice of the visitor to the computer of a user in another room. The service is the first of its kind by a staffing service company, according to the Nagoya-based firm.

Jenkins family to leave for U.S.

SADO, Japan - Charles Jenkins (R), a former U.S. Army sergeant, and his wife Hitomi Soga (2nd from L), a former Japanese abductee repatriated from North Korea, leave Sado, Niigata Prefecture, on June 13 to visit the United States to meet Jenkins' mother for the first time in 40 years. Their two North Korea-born daughters will travel with the couple to North Carolina.
