        TOKYO, Japan - The upper reaches of Mt. Fuji remain covered with snow despite the arrival of summer. Authorities say the traditional July 1 start of the climbing season is likely to be delayed as the four routes to the 3,776-meter peak are still buried by late-falling snow.           MACHIDA, Japan - A photo taken from a Kyodo News helicopter on April 20 shows the apartment on the Tokyo suburb of Machida where a man locked himself and fired nine shots toward the outside. The man is believed to have shot another man in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, just before he came to Machida, police said.

              TOKYO, Japan - The AUM Shinrikyo cult on June opened to the public three of its facilities, including a training center (shown in photo) in Tokyo's Suginami Ward. The cult said it opened the facilities to provide information on their activities as well as facilities in the hope of reducing anxiety lingering among locals and society.

                KASHIHARA, Japan - Photo taken from Kyodo News helicopter March 21 shows an aerial view of the remains of an artificial pond constructed in the seventh century in the village of Asuka, Nara Prefecture. The Archaeological Institute of Kashihara said the pond, one of the oldest of its kind, measures more than 200 meters long, over 70 meters wide, larger than initially expected. Archaeologists think such ponds were used to entertain foreign delegations or vassals.

                    TOKYO, Japan - Mt. Oyama, a volcano located on Miyakejima Island, some 180 kilometers south of Tokyo, erupts Aug. 10, spewing smoke as high as 3,000 meters. The 813-meter volcano (in this photo taken from a Kyodo News helicopter) erupted for the first time since July 15, forcing nearby residents to evacuate.

                      NAGOYA, Japan - Photo taken from a Kyodo News helicopter shows the site of a gunpowder factory explosion that occurred late on the evening of Aug. 1 in the town of Taketoyo, Aichi Prefecture. No trace is seen of the factory owned by Tokyo-based NOF Corp. which stood just above the other gutted factories. The blast left 56 people injured.
