NARA, Japan - The verandah of the Nigatsudo Hall of the Todaiji Temple in Nara is lit up with torches waved by monks in the annual ''omizutori (water drawing)'' rite March 12. Some 30,000 visitors turned out for one of the classical rites in the ancient capital Nara. The rite symbolizes the arrival of spring.

(2)Horyuji Temple confirmed built after 668 A.D.

The Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties said on July 15 that the main hall has been found to have been built after 668, evidence against the theory that the famous temple was rebuilt between 708 and 714 after it was destroyed by a fire.

Kiyomizudera Temple lit up

KYOTO, Japan - Kiyomizudera Temple in Kyoto is illuminated March 28 ahead of the spring sightseeing season. The lighting up is an annual event that began in 1992 to allow people to visit the temple in the evening.
