Iizuka named as new head of group of abductees' kin

TOKYO, Japan - Shigeo Iizuka (R), vice chairman of the group of relatives of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea, speaks at a news conference at a Tokyo hotel Nov. 24 after he was named as the group's new leader to replace Shigeru Yokota (2nd from R). Yokota to retire as head of abductee families' group

TOKYO, Japan - Shigeru Yokota (file photo), who heads a group of Japanese families of victims of North Korea's abductions, plans to step down from the post due to waning physical strength. Yokota, 74, became the head of the Association of the Families of Victims Kidnapped by North Korea when it was formed on March 25, 1997, and has led the campaign, together with his wife Sakie, 71, to seek the return of abductees, including their daughter Megumi, who was abducted by North Korean agents in 1977 at the age of 13.

Kim Young Nam to Japan: 'Leave me alone'

JEONJU, South Korea - Kim Young Ja, sister of Kim Young Nam, the South Korean man believed to have been abducted to North Korea nearly three decades ago, speaks at a press conference in Jeonju on July 2. She quoted her brother as saying at their recent reunion that Japan is making false claims about his former wife, Japanese abductee Megumi Yokota. ''Please leave me alone and tell them (the Japanese) so,'' she quoted him as saying.

Chimura couple told police ex-agent Sin Guang Su taught them Korean

TOKYO, Japan - Two repatriated Japanese victims of abduction by North Korea have told police that Sin Guang Su (in file photo), a former North Korean agent who is on the international wanted list, was in charge of educating them in the North, police sources said Feb. 2. Yasushi and Fukie Chimura, both 50, have said to police investigators that Sin, 76, taught them Korean and other things at a facility in North Korea.

Repatriated abductees identify 2 N. Korean agents

TOKYO, Japan - File photo shows Sin Guang Su, one of two North Korean agents, who have been identified by repatriated Japanese abductees Kaoru Hasuike and Yasushi Chimura as being responsible for their abductions, investigative sources said on Dec. 30. Their testimonies have prompted the Japanese police to launch an investigation in order to obtain arrest warrants for the two agents. The other agent is a man simply known as ''Park.'' the source said.

Jenkins and Soga meet press

WELDON, United States - Charles Jenkins (L), a U.S. Army deserter who spent decades in North Korea, and his wife, Hitomi Soga, a repatriated Japanese who had been abducted by North Korea, meet the press in Weldon, North Carolina, on June 20. The couple, along with their North Korean-born daughters Mika and Brinda, came to the United States on June 14 for Jenkins' first reunion in more than 40 years with his 91-year-old mother.

China to 'react strongly' to N. Korea nuke test: lawmaker

BEIJING, China - Wang Jiarui (in file photo), head of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee's International Department, told a senior Japanese opposition lawmaker on May 12 that China would ''react strongly'' to a North Korean nuclear weapons test. Yoshito Sengoku, chairman of the Policy Research Committee of the Democratic Party of Japan, told reporters that Wang made the comment, which implies China's opposition to such a test, during a meeting in Beijing.
