JR West reports 621 false records on tunnel, bridge checks

OSAKA, Japan - West Japan Railway Co. executive Kenzo Tokuoka (front) apologizes in Osaka on July 6 after the company found 621 cases of fabrication of records in its documents since March 2000, most of them falsely suggesting that regular inspections of tunnels and bridges along the Sanyo Shinkansen Line and conventional train lines had been conducted.

          West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) has begun anti-viral and anti-bacterial treatment of the entire interior of its trains, with plans to implement the treatment on about 3,600 cars running in the Keihanshin area by the end of September and eventually on all 5,200 cars on conventional lines. The plan is to ensure the safety and security of passengers under with corona. The system uses chemicals that have been confirmed by a third-party organization to be effective against influenza and noroviruses. The effect will last for several years, the company said. The chemicals will be sprayed on windows, seats and other places where passengers may touch them. The number of commuters and other passengers in the Kansai region is gradually returning following the lifting of the state of emergency declared for the new coronavirus infection on March 21.             KYOTO, Japan, June 7 Kyodo - Central Japan Railway Co.'s new N700S bullet train conducts its fifth test run on June 6, 2019, between the western Japan cities of Maibara and Kyoto. The train is scheduled to commence commercial service in July 2020 on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line linking Tokyo with Osaka.
