Ex-abductee Hasuike wins nonfiction award

TOKYO, Japan - Repatriated abductee Kaoru Hasuike (file photo) won an award Aug. 27, 2009, for a nonfiction work that features his experience of being abducted to North Korea and living in the reclusive country. Hasuike went missing along with his girlfriend, Yukiko Okudo, in Niigata Prefecture in July 1978, and returned to Japan in October 2002 with Okudo, to whom he got married in North Korea, after Pyongyang admitted to past abductions of Japanese citizens. Iizuka named as new head of group of abductees' kin

TOKYO, Japan - Shigeo Iizuka (R), vice chairman of the group of relatives of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea, speaks at a news conference at a Tokyo hotel Nov. 24 after he was named as the group's new leader to replace Shigeru Yokota (2nd from R). Yokota's daughter Megumi was kidnapped by Pyongyang in 1977 when she was 13, while Iizuka is an elder brother of Yaeko Taguchi, who was taken to N. Korea in 1978 when she was 22.

Ex-abductee Soga voices gratitude for support

SADO, Japan - Former abductee Hitomi Soga speaks at a news conference in Sado, Niigata Prefecture, on Oct. 17 as she marks the fifth anniversary of her repatriation from North Korea. Soga and four other Japanese abductees, abducted by North Korean agents in three separate cases in 1978 from Niigata and Fukui prefectures, were repatriated to Japan on Oct. 15, 2002.

Kin ask gov't to seek early resolution of N. Korea abduction issue

Relative of Japanese abductee calls Romanian visit 'fruitful'

NARITA, Japan - Teruaki Masumoto (L), secretary general of a group of relatives of Japanese abductees, and Tsutomu Nishioka, deputy representative of a group supporting the abductees' families, speak to reporters at Narita airport about their trip to Romania to see the family of a suspected Romanian abductee to North Korea. They met with relatives of Doina Bumbea in southern Romania last week. She went missing in Italy in 1978 and is believed to have been taken to North Korea.

TOKYO, Japan - Shigeru Yokota (file photo), who heads a group of Japanese families of victims of North Korea's abductions, plans to step down from the post due to waning physical strength. Yokota, 74, became the head of the Association of the Families of Victims Kidnapped by North Korea when it was formed on March 25, 1997, and has led the campaign, together with his wife Sakie, 71, to seek the return of abductees, including their daughter Megumi, who was abducted by North Korean agents in 1977 at the age of 13.

U.S., Japan negotiators to affirm cooperation on N. Korea

TOKYO, Japan - Christopher Hill (R), chief U.S. negotiator at the six-party talks on North Korea, visits the Japanese Foreign Ministry in Tokyo on Dec. 16 for preliminary consultations with chief Japanese delegate to the talks Kenichiro Sasae (L) before the negotiations resume in Beijing on Dec. 18. U.S. Ambassador to Japan Thomas Schieffer (C) was also present.

Film on Japanese girl abducted by N. Korea debuts in Japan

TOKYO, Japan - The critically acclaimed Canadian documentary telling the story of a Japanese girl, Megumi Yokota, kidnapped by North Korean agents who became a symbol of one of Japan's most thorny diplomatic issues, hit screens across Japan on Nov. 25. Megumi's father Shigeru (R) and mother Sakie (L) read remarks on the film after its first showing at a movie theater in Tokyo's Shibuya district the same day.

Japanese abductee's husband says he did not talk about Yokota's past

PYONGYANG, North Korea - This photo of Kim Young Nam, a South Korean believed abducted by North Korea, and Japanese abductee Megumi Yokota who married him, was released by Kim during his meeting with a Japanese press delegation at a Pyongyang hotel on July 6. Kim said it was taken immediately after their marriage.
