(3)Typhoon Songda causes severe damage across Japan

YAMAGUCHI, Japan - Firefighters look for missing crew members of the Indonesian-registered freighter Tri Ardhianto on Kasado Island in the Seto Inland Sea off Yamaguchi Prefecture on Sept. 8. The 6,315-ton freighter ran aground on Sept. 7 in strong winds triggered by Typhoon Songda. All 22 crew members aboard the ship went missing. Nine bodies believed to be that of the missing crew members were found.

                MIYAZAKI, Japan - The 198-ton Kinyu, a Honduran-registered tugboat, is seen stranded in waters off Miyazaki, southwestern Japan on April 8. Its eight Indonesian crew members were rescued without injuries, the Japan Coast Guard said. The vessel, owned by an Indonesian company, was on its way to Hong Kong from the town of Hakata, Ehime Prefecture.

                      Fisheries school asks U.S. to continue search for 9 missing

                      UWAJIMA, Japan - Uwajima Fisheries High School students submit a petition to the United States calling for the search for the nine Japanese missing in the Feb. 9 collision between their fisheries training ship and a U.S. submarine to continue and for the trawler to be raised as soon as possible. Etsuko Yamaguchi, deputy head of a student council, handed the petition of about 140 signatures to Robert Ludan (R), U.S. Consul General for Osaka and Kobe, who visited the school Feb. 17 to apologize for the accident. The Greeneville crashed into and sank the 499-ton Ehime Maru during a rapid-surfacing drill off Hawaii. Four students and two teachers at the school and three crew members of the ship are still missing.
