Supreme Court holds state responsible for Minamata disease

TOKYO, Japan - Environment Minister Yuriko Koike bows to plaintiffs who sued the central and Kumamoto prefectural governments to seek compensation for Minamata mercury-poisoning disease at the Environment Ministry in Tokyo on Oct. 15 after the Supreme Court held the governments responsible for the disease in the 1950s and 1960s.
